Legal and non-legal rules
Legal rules are are enforced by the courts eg. Traffic laws, where as non-legal rules are made by an organisation or school etc. monopoly rules are non-legal rule.
Criminal law
Relates to omissions against society.
The main aims of criminal law:
Apprehend
Prosecute
Punish
Eg. Assault murder rape etc
Civil law
Relates to disputes between two parties.
Main aim of civil law:
Return the person who's rights have been infringed to their original position.
Eg. Tort law, family law, consumer law, property law

Courts (source of law)
The courts job is to interpret the law.
Precedent
When they have a 'grey area' the have to make a decision and then the next time this grey area occurs they'll follow the decision of the previous court.
This is called 'precedent'
