What does "Green" mean?
shorthand for sustainable development, or high performance buildings. Environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work
Buildings in the US consume more than ___% of our total energy and ___% of electricity annually
30%, 60%
what are some of the benefits to green building practices?
reduced operating costs
enhance marketability increase worker productivity reduce potential liability resulting from poor IAQ |
What is the LEED green building rating system??
voluntary, consensus based, market-driven building rating system based on existing proven technology.
What does LEED evaluate?
environmental performance from a whole building perspective over a buildings life cycle, providing a definitive standard for what constitutes a "green" building
The rating system is organized into five environmental categories. What are they?
Sustainable Sites
Water Efficiency Energy & Atmosphere Materials & Resources Indoor Environmental Quality Additional Catagory: Innovation & Design |
What is the first step in obtaining LEED certification for a project?
Register online at USGBC.org under the LEED section. This will establish contact with USBGC and provides access to the LEED-online software tool Errata. Using LEED on-line is required
what can you do on LEED on-line?
submit 100% of paperwork, store LEED info, resources, and get support
LEED online enables teams to upload credit templates, track credit interpretation requests, manage key project details, contact customer service, and communicate with reviewers throughout design and construction reviews |
Credit Interpretation Rulings (CIR's)
first, review online CIR's that other companies had questions for. See if the answer is there
If no CIR exists, LEED project team should submit an online credit interp. request |
If asking for a CIR what should you say in the interpreatation request?
provide a brief but explicit description of challenge; it should be based on prerequisite or credit info. Place special emphasis on the intent of the prerequisit or credit. If possible, offer solution and solictit approval or rejection of proposal. Follow CIR guidelines on USBGC website
How will USGBC rule on requests for CIR (credit interpretation)
USGBC will rule on requests electronically according to the posted schedule, either through a posting on the CIR web page or via email correspondence.
What will you be able to do if you utilize the Two-Phase application process for a project?
Project teams will be able to split the certification process into two phases.
Rather than submitting all at once, teams will be able to submit designated "design phase credits" at the end of the design phase for review by USGBC. this does not mean that the credit is awarded at this time but project teams are notified of the likelihood of their project obtaining the point when construction is done. Teams must submit verification that the project was implemented according to plan |
What are the potential credits that can be reviewed during the design phase and how many design phase reviews are there?
One design review per project. Look on USGBC for Design Review points
Design Phase Review
No certification is awarded at this time. Gives chance for team to assess likelihood of credit achievement and requires follow through to ensure the design is executed in the construction phase according to design specifications
Construction Phase Review
Meant for projects close to completion. This is submitted at the end of construction.
when can appeals be made for certification?
They may be filed after either the design phase review or the final review
what points must be awarded to achieve:
Certified Silver Gold Platinum |
Certified: 21-26
Silver 27-31 Gold 32-41 Platinum: 42-57 |
