linked genes
genes that are on the same chromosome, and therefore tend to be inherited together
sex-linked genes
genes that are on the X or Y chromosome, and therefore show different patterns of inheritance than the autosomal genes
linkage map
map that shows the relative location of genes on a chromosome. it is determined based on the assumption that genes that are far apart on chromosomes will more often be separated during crossing over.
map unit (aka centimorgan)
a unit of a linkage map that corresponds to a 1% recombination frequency
Barr body
the inactivated X chromosome (in females only. this way, only 1 X chromosome is active in both males and females)
translocation
a segment of a chromosome is moved to a nonhomologous chromosome
genomic imprinting
when one allele is silenced during formation of gametes.
extranuclear genes
these genes are located in mitochondria and chloroplasts. they are inherited only from the mother, since the zygote's cytoplasm and organelles come from the egg cell.
