Treatment options for a LOCAL or REGIONAL tumor
treated with surgery, radiation, or other site-specific treatments such as antibodies

Lumpectomy
takes the tumor + 1CM of the Tissue
Wide Excision
takes tumor + Wide portion of tissue if becomes invasive
Quadrectomy
takes the tumor + a quarter of the breast tissue
Simple Mastectomy
Very aggressive or large tumor, takes whole breast.
Radical Mastectomy
takes whole breast + up to shoulder including lymph nodes
Lymphedema
occurs because of the removal of lymph nodes during breast cancer surgery, draining fluid no longer has anywhere to go. Causes swelling in the armpit, arm, and chest of the patient.
Treatments- Radiation Therapy (Brachytherapy)
uses high-energy radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors (radiation=ionizing energy, BREAKS DNA*)
External-beam radiation therapy
destroys cells, either directly or by interfering with cell reproduction using high energy X-rays.
Radioactive Material
placed in body in the area near cancer cells (internal radiation therapy, also known as brachytherapy)
Mammosite Radiation Therapy
catheter is inserted at the time of lumpectomy or shortly after, radioactive seed or source is put in place to create high dose region, high dose rate brachytherapy is used for treatment administration
Chemotherapy
Catheter placed inside body- the treatment of disease by the use of chemical substances, esp. the treatment of cancer by cytotoxic and other drugs.

75% of breast cancers are estrogen-receptor-positive ("ER-positive" or "ER+").
Approximately 25% of breast cancer patients have tumors that are HER2+.
Tamoxifen
Tamoxifen is a selective estrogen receptor modulator, or SERM.
Increases risk of uterine cancer and blood clots.
