What are hagfish and how do they feed? |
Something that really doesn't need to exist, imho. (Jawless, ee-like, deep water, feed on polychaete worms, molluscs, and acavange. They feed by absorbing nutrients through their skin, because they feed on dead animals from the inside out. ) |
What kinds of fishes are included under the cartilaginous fish umbrella? |
sharks, rays, chimeras |
How is buoyancy managed in cartilagenous fishes? |
lipid (fat) storage largely in the liver |
How is lift provided in cartilaginous fishes |
Variations on caudal tail shape |
How is drag reduced in cartilaginous fishes? |
Dermal ossicles (placoid scales), they prevent turbulence on skin. This phenomenon is mimicked (biomimetic) to create surfaces on ships to reduce drag. |
How do sharks use osmoregulation? |
Keep blood isotonic in water, getting rid of excess salts through a rectal gland (jazzy). |
What are two different ways that cartilaginous fish feed? |
Predatory sharks have rows of teeth that are replaced continually. Some sharks are filter feeders, eating coprepods and small shrimp using gill rakers (fancy). |
What are two different ways that cartilaginous fish reporduce? |
Lay egg cases Viviparous or ovoviviparous and give birth to live young |
What is a lateral line system? |
Fluid-filled canals down head and trunk that are connected to nerves and detect water vibrations. |
What are ampullae of Lorenzini? |
Electrical detectors |
What are the two specialized structures in the eyes of cartilaginous fish? |
Tapetum Lucidum - low light intensity vision nictating membrane - protect eye from damage |
How do bony fish (osteichtyes) regulate osmolarity? |
They regulate blood and tissue salt content to keep blood hypotonic. |
How do bony fishes regulate buoyancy? |
Use a swim bladder in which gas is excahnged by a network of capillaries. |
What are rete mirabile? |
Network of capillaries in bony fish used to control buoyancy. |
