Instrumental Learning/ operant conditioning
The ability to learn about the relationship between behaviors and consequences
Procedure of operant conditioning
Involves three things (1) an environment context, (2) a behavior in that context (3) an event that follows that behavior (the consequence).
Appetitive events
Things an individual seeks
Aversive events
Things the individual finds unpleasant and seeks to avoid
Procedure of operant conditioning
The presentation of consequences when the individual engages in a designated behavior or behavior pattern in a given situation or context
Phenomenon of operant conditioning
The observed change in behavior after an individual experiences the procedure of operant conditioning; that is, when behaviors followed by some events (such as food, money, approval safety) are more likely to occur again, or behaviors followed by other events ( such as shock, reprimands, loss of privileges) are less likely to occur again
Cumulative Record
The total number of behaviors that have occurred to that point in time is plotted against time
Magazine Training
The procedure for teaching rats to approach the food tray when they hear the food dispenser ( or food magazine) drop a pellet in the food tray
Extinction
Procedure of discontinuing the consequence
Extinction
Procedure of discontinuing the consequence
Spontaneous recivery
The phenomenon of a procedure or consequence reoccurring with reintroduction after an extended period of extinction
Extinction
Procedure of discontinuing the consequence
Spontaneous recovery
The phenomenon of a procedure or consequence reoccurring with reintroduction after an extended period of extinction
Shaping
Rewarding closer and closer approximations to the final behavior
Chaining(backward chaining)
The last action in the sequence is trained first, and each preceding action is added one at a time until the entire chain of actions is performed
Procedure of reinforcement
The presentation of a certain class of stimulus events in a temporal relation with either a stimulus or a behavior
Reinforcing Stimulus (reinforcer)
A stimulus or stimulus event that has the ability to produce a change in the strength of a reflex or behavior by virtue of its relationship to a CS( in Pavlovian conditioning) or a behavior (in operant conditioning )
