When it comes to EHR functionality, what we thought would be necessary to support the clinic’s functions is a lab interface. A lab interface interfaces with the external labs, which would speed up the process of receiving results. This lab interface would allow the physicians to look at results for blood work and also any images (such as x-rays or MRIs) that may have been performed on patients. This could, in turn, benefit their treatment at the clinic.

Opportunities for Improvement:
This particular area was very difficult to decide on because of the fact that we saw how well rounded and how everything already seems to work just nicely for you guys. Just a few thoughts:
-converting the tickler system from paper based form to electronic form would reduce the risk of missed or lost follow up reminders. It would be easier for tracking and staying up to date on daily follow ups.

-As mentioned previously, an interface with their contracted labs. This would allow for easier, quicker, and daily access to lab results instead of waiting for a fax.
-E-prescribing would reduce time spent on calling in prescriptions to multiple pharmacies which would also lessen any communication errors
-Any of these opportunities would reassure the overall quality of care.

Lastly:
Overall, our Team found the UL Student Health Services Clinic to be portrayed as a well-established practice and is firmly HIPAA compliant. Their teamwork and the many hats that they wear keep everyone in line with any task at hand.
We have determined that the most beneficial approach, not only to their practice but also to the University, is, at this time, to remain with the current processes and not pursue an EHR due to cost sensitivity.
