Layers of the Atmosphere |
1. Troposphere 2. Stratosphere 3.Mesosphere 4. Thermosphere 5. Exosphere |
In which layer does life happen? |
Weather occurs in the troposphere layer. We live in the troposphere layer. The troposphere is the first layer above the surface and contains half of the Earth's atmosphere. |
Troposphere layer |
Ozone layer lays here. Lowest layer. Jets fly here. |
Ozone Layer |
The ozone layer is a concentration of ozone molecules in the stratosphere.
Mesosphere |
Many meteors entering the atmosphere burn up in this layer. The coldest parts of our atmosphere are located in this layer and can reach –90°C. |
Thermosphere |
The space shuttles orbit in the thermosphere.
Thermosphere the hottest layer in the atmosphere. |
Important facts about the OZONE LAYER |
The ozone layer is like a sunscreen, and a thinning of it would mean that more ultra-violet rays would be reaching us. Too many UV rays would cause more sunburn, and because sunburn causes skin cancer, this too would increase deaths. These UV rays are also dangerous for our eyes and could cause an increase in people becoming blind. That is why sun cream and sunglasses are very important. |
What is the Ozone Hole? |
Every spring, a hole as big as the USA develops in the ozone layer over Antarctica, in the South Pole. A smaller hole develops each year over the Arctic, at the North Pole. And there are signs that the ozone layer is getting thinner all over the planet.

Types of Gas that hurts the Ozone Layer
One group of gases is particularly likely to damage the ozone layer. These gases are called CFCs, Chloro-Fluoro-Carbons.
For example: Spray cans, in refrigerators, air conditioning systems and some fire extinguishers. |
Exosphere |
The last layer and the thinnest.
The exosphere is closest to outer space. |
What can humans do to help the Ozone layer? |
