stratum basale
single layer of columnar epithelium. intense mitotic activity here. melanocytes are present in this layer. (melanoma)
stratum spinosum
eight to ten rows of polygonal cells which are keratocytes or "prickle cells". they are responsible for the development of the kerotin precursor-the cells are held together by "spot welds" called desmosomes. Melanocytes are also present in this layer
stratum granulosum
three to five rows of flattened cells that contain granules of keratohyalin which is a step in the formation of keratin. Nuclei are called pyknotic which means that they are in various stages of degeneration. (cells are dying)
stratum lucidum
consists of several rows of clear, flat, dead cells that contain droplets of a substance called eleidin. eleidin is formed from keratohyalin and is eventually transformed into keratin. (palm of hands and soles of feet)
stratum corneum
consists of 25 to 30 rows of flat, dead cells completely filled with keratin. these cells are continuously shed and replaced.
