What are the four types of laxatives?
BLSS
bulk-forming
lubricant
stimulant
saline
You are about to administer Metamucil (bulk-forming) and other medications. What is the BEST way to give these medications?
Metamucil is a bulk forming laxative and therefore she be given a different time and not with the other meds to risk of improper absorption.
A saline laxative works quickly. How quickly?
It takes 1 to 6 hours.
What makes a stimulant laxative work differently from the other three types?
A stimulant laxative causes an increase in peristalsis. Bulk forming causes more water to be absorbed to increase the size of the fecal mass. The Saline laxative pulls water into fecal mass to create a more watery stool. A lubricant laxative causes more WATER and FAT to be absorbed into the stools.
The elderly are given Colace (a lubricant laxative) to PREVENT NOT TREAT constipation. What are the 2 main side effects?
abdominal cramping
diarrhea
Metamucil (bulk-forming) can prevent AND treat chronic constipation. What is the mechanism of action?
absorbs water, thus increase the size of the fecal mass
What two laxatives SHOULD NOT be used on a regular basis?
saline laxatives due to risk of FVD

stimulant laxatives due to laxative dependence

bulk-forming and lubricant laxatives can be used daily
Because stimulant laxatives irritate the bowel, the side effects include: (5)
abdominal cramping
nausea
fainting
diarrhea
