About laws
Laws are about rules

British laws are intended to make life fair - so we're all judges by the same set of rules. Every time someone breaks the law, they are committing a crime.
Rights are protected by law
If someones rights are threatened thats when the law get involved.
How a law is made
Government draws up a bill

Write out several drafts coming up with new laws.

The first reading

Read it out and set a second date for the second reading.

The second reading

They are debated and a vote is taken if the bill is not voted for it will not pass through the next stage

Committee stage

This is when each detail of the bill is scrutinised. Done by a group of mp's often make changes to part of the bill

Reports stage and third reading

The committee reports to the house of commons on which bits of the bill has changed a vote and a debate happens again.

If the lords make any changes these have to be agreed by the HOC the bill will only become law when both houses agree on the wording.

Gets signed of by the queen

Now an act of parliament
