Supervision
Supervision=process that involves supervisor overseeing the professional work of the trainee with 4 major goals: 1) to promote supervisee growth and development 2) to protect the welfare of the client 3) to monitor supervisee performance and to serve as a gatekeeper for the profession 4) to empower the supervisee to self-supervise and carry out these goals as an independent professional.
Supervisor's roles and responsibilities
1) supervisors ultimately responsible both ethically and legally for the actions of their trainees, 2) must monitor trainees' progress and be familiar with caseloads 3) have a position of power with their supervisees 4) informed consent in supervision 5) supervisors have responsibility of protecting welfare of clients, supervisees, public,and profession, 6) must have conceptual knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques.
Methods of supervision
1) self-report 2) process notes 3) audiotapes 4) videotapes 5) live supervision 6) verbal exchange and direct observation are the most commonly used forms of supervision.
Ethical issues in supervision
1) performance evaluation and monitoring supervisee activities 2) confidentiality in supervision 3) ability to work with alternative perspectives/theories other than their own 4) session boundaries and respectful treatment of supervisees 5) orientation to professional roles-supervisor must clearly define roles 6) supervisor expertise/competency issues 7) disclosure to clients-supervisor must inform clients of that trainee is a student 8) modeling ethical behavior and responding to ethical concerns 9) crisis coverage and intervention 10) multicultural sensitivity to clients and supervisees 11) appropriate dual role handling 12) termination and follow-up issues-must ensure continuity of client care/prevention of abandonment 13) differentiating supervision from psychotherapy 14) must refrain from sexual misconduct.
Legal aspects of supervision
1) informed consent: clients must be made fully aware that the counselor is a trainee and is meeting on a regular basis for supervisory sessions and that the client's case may be discussed in group supervision meetings and that sessions may be taped or observed; 2) confidentiality and its limits: must respect client confidentiality and discuss issues only within the contexts permitted 3) liability: supervisors bear legal responsibility for the welfare of those clients being counseled by trainees. Two types of liability: 1) Direct liability: occurs if supervisor is derelict in supervision of trainee, if they give inappropriate advice about treatment, or if they give tasks to trainees that exceed their competence; 2) Vicarious liability: supervisors are responsible for the actions of their supervisees.
Supervision for school counselors (SC)
1) clinical supervision is usually not readily available for SC. Ethical issues in SC: 1) competence of supervision 2) confidentiality 3) relationship boundaries 4) accountability and liability-school principle holds liability for action of SC 5) evaluation and performance.
Multicultural issues in supervision
the supervisor is responsible to help supervisees identify and deal with cultural issues in the counseling process; train and model genuine respect and awareness of diversity issues.
Sexual relationships with supervisees
prohibited with current supervisees. supervisor's responsibility to maintain professional boundaries with student. usually an older male supervisor with younger female student.
