Administrative Law
Law related to the relationship carried out between people and the various government departments, boards, and agencies.
Bylaws
Laws that deal with local issues and are passed by municipal governments.
Civil/Private Law
Laws governing relationships between private individuals and between private individuals and organizations
Contract Law
A branch of civil law that governs arrangements between businesses or between people and businesses
Criminal Law
A category of public law that prohibits and punishes behaviour that injures people, property, and society as a whole.
Distinguishing a case
A position decided upon by a judge to reject previous decisions in a case and create a new precedent. This can happen if one judge does not agree with another, new technology has emerged that affects the logistics of the case, or if an overall change of society has taken place since the previous rulings.
Domestic Law
Law that governs activity within a nation's borders.
International Law
Laws created mainly through customs that deal with how nations react. Mainly consists of treaties that codify previous customs.
Jurisdiction
The political or legal authority to pass and enforce laws; also, the judicial authority to decide a case.
Procedural Law
Laws that prescribes the methods of enforcing the rights, duties, and responsibilities of substantive law.
Property Law
Law that regulates ownership rights in all property and governs the transfer of property.
Public Law
Law that deals with interactions between the government and its citizens.
Substantive Law
A category of domestic law that defines the rights, duties, and obligations of citizens and their government.
Tort Law
The branch of civil law that holds persons or private organizations responsible for damage they cause another person as a result of accidental or deliberate action.
