Erathosthenes

Greek philosopher and mathematician, calculated the earth's size, realised any place could be located by a grid of Latitudes and Longitude.

Relative Location

place relating to another place, EG : "Take a left from the bus stop."

Absolute Location

Position of a place based on the coordinates of a grid system. EG : "41.45 defree north latitude and 72.40 degree west longtude."

Latitude

The angular distance of a place north or south of the equator.

Angular Distance

The distance which is measured in degrees or "° "

Zenith distance

Angle that the sun makes at noon with the Zenith.

Zenith

The point in the sky vertically above the observer.

Declination of the sun

The angle the sun makes north or south of the equator on a particular day.

Torrid Zone

Between Tropic Of Cancer and Tropic Of Capricorn. Recieves direct rays of sun almost throughout the year. Is the hottest.


Temperate Zone

Between Tropic of cancer and Arctic circle in the northern hemisphere and between the Tropic Of Capricorn in the and Antarctic circlle in the southern hemisphere.

Frigid Zone

Near the polar regions, suns rays are very slanted so it is very cold. Between arctic circle and north pole in the north and antarctic circle and south pole in the south. (Frigid = Cold)

Longitude

The angular distance of a place east or west of the prime meridian (aka Zero meridian and Fixed meridian)

Time zones

Area in the world where clocks record the same time.

Standard Fleming

Canadian, suggested dividing the earth int 24 time zones.

Local Time

Time of a place reckoned by mid-day sun.

Standard Time

When the local time of a central place is taken as the time for the whole country (or large area) .

International Date Line

The line at which a day is gained, not a straight line, passes over only sea or oceans , at the 180° latitude. West to East a day is lost, East to West a day is gained.
