Latitude
imaginary lines on a map that encircle the earth from east to west . Also known as parallels.
Longitude
imaginary lines on a map that show bisect the earth from north to south, from one pole to the other. Also known as meridians
Compass Rose
the small drawing that uses one or more arrows to show cardinal and/or intermediate directions on a map or globe.
Prime Meridian
Zero degrees longitude. It is the base line used to measure east-west location. It divides the world into eastern and western hemispheres.
Meridian
Another name given to lines of longitude. They form the basis of our time system.
Hemisphere
The earth is divided into four parts: the northern hemisphere is the half of the earth above the equator, the southern hemisphere which if the half of the earth below the equator, the eastern hemisphere, which is the half of the earth east of the prime meridian, and the western hemisphere, which is the half of the earth west of the prime meridian.
Equator
the longest line of latitude and is known as zero degrees latitude. It is located midway between the poles.
Poles
The two ends of the axis around which the earth rotates, (turns). There is one at each end of the earth: north pole and south pole.
Continents:
Large land masses with geologically meaningful boundaries, (that is, they are separated by something recognizable). There are six continents: Eurasia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica and Australia.
Tropic of Cancer
an imaginary line that is 23.5⁰ north of the equator.
Tropic of Capricorn
an imaginary line that is 23.5⁰ south of the equator.
Arctic Circle
an imaginary line located at 66°32'N of the equator.
Antarctic Circle
an imaginary line located at 66°32'S of the equator
Cardinal Directions
north, south, east and west. These are the largest points on the compass rose.
Coordinate
the point on a map or globe where a line of latitude and longitude cross.
