Dominion of New England
|
1686; As opposition to Britain, the Dominion of New England was made to strengthen colonial defense against the natives. It also brought the colonies closer to Britain because it enforced the Navigation acts, which were hated.

Navigation Acts
|
1651; Acts created by Britain that forbid American trade with other countries except for Britain. It led to a lot of illegal smuggling of goods.

|
1688; In England, King James II, a Catholic, was overthrown and William II and Mary II took over, as Protestants.

New York
|
Claimed by Columbus (for the Netherlands) in 1609, it was called New Amsterdam while under Dutch control up until 1664. It was very diverse- home to various races and cultures of people. In 1664 Charles II seized New York and granted it to his brother, the Duke of York, and it was renamed to New York. Dutch influence on New York's architecture and American culture (i.e. Waffles and Santa Claus) are still seen today. New York was considered one of the middle colonies and a Royal colony.

New Jersey
|
A middle colony, New Jersey had fertile soil and exported a lot of grain. Ethnically mixed it was primarily agricultural and began as a proprietary colony.

William Penn
|
WIlliam Penn, an Englishman and a Quaker, was granted a large portion of land in 1681 the colonies, he named it Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania
|
Established in 1681 by William Penn, Pennsylvania was the most advertised colony (for freedom of religion- except for Jews and Catholics) as well as most populous and rich. Penn insisted the natives of the area be treated respectfully and Pennsylvania had no restrictions on immigration. It was extremely ethnically mixed. A proprietary colony.

Delaware
|
Middle Colony, settled by Swedes and Dutch. It was called New Sweden. It was taken control over by the Duke of York in 1664. William Penn took control of Delaware for a short while and Pennsylvania and Delaware shared the same governor. It was a proprietary colony.

Holy Experiment
|
An attempt by a religious group, the Quakers, to establish a community by themselves- Pennsylvania. It was established to show that their simple life could function as a society sucessfully.

Quakers
|
A Prostestant group, they "quaked" with emotion while they prayed. They spoke very formally and were very stubborn, yet they were simple people against violence and war. Hated Roman Catholics.
