Toner cartridge

Supplies toner to the printer. Color laser printers have four toner cartridges: black, yellow, cyan, magenta.

Imaging Drum

An aluminum cylinder coated with particles of photosensitive compounds. The drum is grounded and the particles aren't. When light hits the particles their charge is drained through the cylinder.

Erase lamp

Exposes the drum to light and discharges the particles

Primary Corona/Charge Roller

Passes negative voltage through drum to charge particles. ~600 to ~1000 volts

Laser

Writes image onto drum after drum is charged. When particles are hit by laser they are discharged to make an image. ~100 volts

Toner

Toner is a fine powder that is charged by the toner cylinder to ~200 to ~500 volts. Because the area where the laser hit is more positive the toner is attracted there.

Transfer Corona/Transfer Roller

The transfer corona, a thin wire, applies a positive charge to the paper, drawing the negatively charged toner particles to the paper. Newer printers accomplish the same feat using a transfer roller. To prevent the paper from wrapping around the drum, the static charge eliminator removes the charge from the paper.

Fuser Assembly

The toner is merely resting on top of the paper after the static charge eliminator has removed the papers static charge. The toner must be melted to the paper. Two rollers, a pressure roller and a heated roller are used to fuse the toner to the paper.
