1. Processing


  • Computer encodes page in printer
  • Printer's firmware process data and stores in RAM

2. Charging


  • Charging roller applies negative electrical charge of -600 V across drums surface
  • Older printers achieve this with corona wire

3. Writing (Exposing)

Laser neutralizes negative charge on drum to form electrostatic negative image

4. Developing

Roller applies toner to drum and sticks to areas of lower charge

5. Transferring


  • Transfer belt pshes paper to transfer roller
  • Roller positively charges paper which pulls toner from the drum to the paper
  • Static charge eliminator reduces charge and keeps paper from sticking to drum

6. Fusing


  • Fuser assembly heats to 400°F
  • Pressure roller presses the paper to the fuse which bonds the toner to the paper

7. Cleaning


  • Sweep strip and cleaning blade cleans drum of residual toner
  • Heat roller is lubricated to ensure even transfer of heat
  • Charge on drum is neutralized
