What is transdiciplinary intervention?

This is when the teacher and therapists, and other specialists involved work together across each discipline to make sure the intervention for the child will be most effective.

Why is it important to justify "least restrictive environment?

If is best for a child to be moved from a classroom of his or her peers, it needs to be explained with good reason. The child needs to benefit from the change of environment.

Why is it important to keep families in the loop with treatment in a school setting?

The families of the children participate in the IEP meetings. Keeping them up to date on progress in therapy will aid in parent involvement in treatment. It is also good to receive reports from the family on how the child is performing at home in relation to his or her goals.

Should the client be involved in deciding on a treatment method?

The language for learning population and their families have valuble information on how treatment are working for them. If you let the child and family be a part of deciding treament, they may be more likely to cooperate and be more accepting of the intervention. They can learn to identify their own strenghts and weaknesses.

How is behavior involved in treatment?

More often than not, a child with language learning disabilities will also have behavioral concerns. As SLPs, we need to prepare strategies to deal with behaviors that may arise.

Why would an SLP utilize functional communication training?

This is done to teach communication skills that are adaptive and conventional in order to replace the impropers behaviors that the child may be presenting.

Explain the first guiding principle of intervention: using curriculum-based instruction.

This is meant to prevent the SLP from having his or her own agenda for treatment. This guiding principle encourages the SLP to create goals based on the curriculum of the school.

Explain the second guiding principle of intervention: Integrating oral and written language.

This guidline is to ensure that the SLP is giving the child an opportunity to show progress with goals when given oral and writting opportunities.

Explain the third guiding principle of intervention: Go Meta.

This guidline encourage the focus of goals be on the language skills and cognitive skills that the student uses at school in his or her curriculum.

Have the student make connections between words and topics. The student can learn to associate a new word with a school topic that they are learning or have learned.

What is the purpose of the metacognitive approach developed by Dole, Sloan, and Trathen for vocabulary development?

This is use to help teach a student different ways for learning new words.

What is a method that can be used to increase story comprehension?

Summarizing is a good training method. The child could read a smaller amounts and then summarize what they have read. The SLP can also teach the child to recognize words that he or she does not know, and find the meaning to them.

For what are organization and learning stategies used?

These two stategies are to help teach the children to monitor, coordinate, and control the learning processes.

For what is self questioning used?

Self questioning is used for the students to asked themselves questions to become more aware of what they know.

What are some of the responsibilities of the SLP when the RTI model is being used?

Consult with teachers, monitor progress, assessment participation, develope and monitor group instruction programs, monitor to decide when students no longer need help, and participate in evaluations.

What is an advantage of the clinical, pull-out approach to therapy?

This approach allows for a quiet environment, as far as treatment in schools, this approach allows for the student to practice and become more prepared once returing back to class.

Describe cooperative learning.

This learning style is when student work together to learn strategies for reading.

What is the purpose of question generation?

Question generation allows a student to ask questions to themselves about part of the story.

What is collaborative intervention?

This intervention allows the SLP to sit in the classroom and/or teach the class as a guest. This will allow the SLP to see some of the difficulties first hand and work with the teacher to come up with treatments that will be most suitable for the student.

What is the role of the SLP in the curriculum at schools?

The SLP is to collaborate with the teacher to develope a curriculum that will accomodate the SLPs students to aid in their learning. The SLP will help the teacher modify the curriculum to suit the needs of the mainstreamed students in order for those students to learn the same information as the other students.
