Euphemism

A mild or inoffensive version of a word

Broadening

Eg. "Holy day" to "holiday". However still retains original meaning

Narrowing

Eg. Meat originally meant food in general, not just animal produce

Weakening

Words losing their original strength. Eg. "Soon" once meant "immediately", whereas now it means 'in the near future'

Amelioration

When semantic change gives a word a more pleasant or positive meaning

Pejoration

Semantic change causes the word's meaning to become less favourable and more negative in meaning

Coinage

Words that are completely new and are not derived from any pre-existing words

Archaic forms

Particular forms of lexis or grammatical forms that have now fallen out of use

Affixing

The addition of suffixes or prefixes. Eg. Micro-wave (and also inter-/super-/mega- etc)
