Certification Facts

- employees are contacted, this activity is not allowed to be conducted during regular work shift/hours


- once bargaining unit has been determined, level of membership support is determined as indicated through signed authorization cards


- only ballot of eligible bargaining unit members are counted


- automatic certification can occur in some jurisdictions if the union can demostrate a high enough level of support or if there has been any unfair labour practices


- represenation vote is supervised by the LRB


Bargaining Zone

the area defined by the bargaining limits on each side, it is the zone within which both parties are willing to negotiate/concede

Cooling Off period

a mandatory provision in a number of jurisdictions whereby the parties must wait a prescribed period of time before taking action in the vent of negoatiations breaking down

Picketing


a.k.a Infroamtion Picketing

conducted by striking employees and sympathizers to make their displeasure known.


is limited to the place of employment or to the place where the struck work is being performed.


It is illegal to do on private property without permission or to block business entrances and exists

Secondary Pickteting
