Einstein explained this by describing light as a stream of particles.
photoelectric effect
Einstein used the word photon to describe what?
particles of light
A magnet moved through wires produces what?
a current in the wires
What type of energy does infrared radiation transmit?
heat energy
The term used to describe the rate at which a wave’s energy flows through an area.
intensity
The scientist that showed that light can produce an interference pattern.
Young
What does RADAR stand for?
Radio Detection And Ranging
List the colors of the visible spectrum in order from lowest frequency to highest frequency.
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet
The scientist who discovered that there is invisible radiation beyond the red end of the visible spectrum.
Herschel
Electromagnetic waves are produced when an electric charge does what?
vibrates at right angles
What is the speed of light in a vacuum?
3.0 x 10 m/s
Does electromagnetic radiation travel faster through air or a solid?
air
As the wavelength of electromagnetic waves increases, the frequency does what?
decreases
The ful range of frequencies of electromagnetic radiation
electromagnetic spectrum
Ultraviolet radiation can be used to kill what?
bacteria
List the types of radio waves
television, radar, microwaves, AM and FM radio
True or False: All electromagnetic waves travel at the same speed in a vacuum.
True
True or False: The different types of elctromagnetic waves have different wavelengths and frequencies.
True
List 2 differences between sound waves and electromagnetic waves.
EM - transverse, do not require a medium, waves are faster
Sound - longitudinal, must have a medium, waves are slower
Explain how a radar gun can be used to determine the speen of a moving car.
A radar gun send out a burst of radio waves at a specific frequency. Those waves reflect off at a moving object and are received by the radar gone. Becasue of the dopplar effect, the frequency of the reflected waves is different. This difference in frequency is used to determine speed.
List the types of electromagnetic waves in order from shortest to longest wavelength.
gamma rays, x-rays, ultraviolet, visible light, infrared, radio
List the types of electromagnetic waves in order from lowest to highest frequency.
radio, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x-rays, gamma rays
