What is a cell wall?
A cell wall is a nonliving permeable wall that surrounds the plasma membrane and supports the cells of most plants.
What is plasmodesmata?
Minute strands of cytoplasm that extends through pores in the cell wall that enables chemical communication.
What are vacuoles?
Vacuoles occupy more than 99% of a cells volume and contains fluid with dissolving salts, sugars, or other substances.
What are chloroplasts?
The site of photosynthesis, the process by which light energy is converted into a form of energy that the plant can use to grow and reproduce.
What are the three main plant tissues called?
Parenchyma, collenchyma and sclerenchyma.
Describe parenchyma cells.
Parenchyma is the simplest tissue type. Parenchyma cells have thin cell walls and large central vacuoles.
Describe collenchyma cells.
Collenchyma cells have cell walls that are unevenly thick. they are used for support that needs to grow quickly.
Describe sclerenchyma cells.
Sclerenchyma cells have thick cell walls and secondary cell walls. It is found in stems, associated with leaf veins and in the outer covering of seeds and nuts .
What organelle generally stores pigments and energy?
Plastids.
What plastids contain pigments other than chlorophyll?
Chromoplasts.
What are carbohydrates usually stored as?
Starch
What does haploid mean?
Having one set of genetic material.
What does diploid mean?
Having two sets of genetic material.
In plant reproduction, fertilization does not happen without what?
Meiosis.
What does meiosis produce?
Meiosis produces two haploid cells by dividing a diploid cell.
What does fertilization produce?
Fertilization produces one diploid cell by fusing two haploid cells.
Describe sporophytes.
Sporophytes are generally multicellular, diploid, and produce haploid cells via meiosis.
Describe gametophytes.
Gametophytes are generally multicellular, haploid, and produce unicellular gametes (egg and sperm).
What is the cotyledon?
It is the plant tissue covering the seed. Think peanut plants and how it has 2 old leaves moving up the stem with the plant.
What Phylum are cellular slime molds from?
Dictyostilomycota
What Phylum are true slime molds from?
Myxomycota
What Phylum are water molds from?
Oomycota
What are mycologists?
Fungus experts
Is the dominant life stage of water molds diploid or haploid?
Diploid
