Hemolysis Test:
-alpha
-beta
-gamma
-alpha hemolytic: partial/incomplete lysis of RBCs causing a greenish halo around colony
-beta: complete lysis of RBS causing a clear halo
-gamma: non-hemolytic
Fermentation Assay
-if phenol red solution is red, pH is >7 = no fermentation
-if PR sol. is yellow, pH is <7 indicating bact has fermented carbohydrate broth into acid
Coagulase Test
if mix bacteria with fibrin and clotting occurs, bact has coagulase enzyme
Catalase Test
if mix H2O2 in bacteria culture and water and bubbles arise, bact has catalase enzyme
Serological Characteristics
-Define?
-3 Examples?
-def: use Abs to detect antigens or use antigens to detect Abs (indirect evidence of infection)
-ELISA
-western blot
-radioimmunoassay
What is the Best Evidence Rule?
It requires that a party seeking to prove the content of a writing (includes films, photos, X-Rays and recordings) must either:

[1] produce the original document or

[2] account for the absence of the original
Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA)
-Purpose?
-Technique?
-distinguish S. aureus from other staph species and micrococcus species
-high salt: no micrococcus can grow
-if bact can ferment mannitol, phenol red will turn yellow bc pH is <7 (S. aureus is +)
