Mood
The emotional tone or "atmosphere" of the poem. A poem about a storm at night may create a dark mood for the nature, or pain will create different moods in readers.
Form
Poets usually use rhyme and rhythm to enhance their language choice.
Imagery
poetry relies heavily on imagery, using vivid descriptive language to describe objects, moods or ideas. since most poems are relatively short, poets rely on imagery to create a picture in readers' minds.
Hyperbole
A hyperbole is an exaggeration for the purpose of emphasis.
Metaphor
A metaphor compares 2 different things not using like or as: Life is but a toy that swings on a bright gold chain, and he has a heart of stone
Simile
A comparison between two different things using like or as: how like a winter hath my absence been, and she is as pretty as a picture.
Symbolism
is the representation of idea or things by other images or things- When reading the poem below ask, "What does the wheelbarrow represent"
Personification
The giving of human qualities to animals, ideas or objects.
Onomatopoeia
Words that sound like the things that name or imitate the sound they make.
Repetition
Using a word more than once in the same or nearby sentences for effect or make a point.
Alliteration
The same sound is used at the start of a series of words.
Assonance
When the internal parts of a series of words is the same.
Paradox
When a phrase seems to contradict itself.
Stanza
A group of lines in a poem, separated by a space.
Narrative Poem
A poem which tells a story.
Allusion
A reference to a famous piece of art, music or literature.
Couplet
2 lines in a poem that have the same rhyme.
Rhyme Scheme
A pattern of rhyme that a poem follows.
Shape Poems
Shape is used to add meaning to a poem.
Meter
The measure of beats in a poem.
Free Verse
When a poem does not follow a set meter or rhyme scheme.
