Gerunds

A verb that functions as a noun and it always ends in -ing!




* Be careful* because verbs end in -ing and are not being disguised as nouns.




Examples: Reading is my favorite hobby.


VS.


I am reading my favorite book.


Reading is a thing, which makes it a noun.


Am reading is acting, as a action, which makes it a verb.

Participles

A verb functioning as an adjective.


There are two types of participles:


Past and present


Past participles end in: -ed, -en, -d, -t, -n, -ne


asked, eaten, saved, dealt, sean, gone


-present participles end in -ing


Examples:


I love my Reading group.


A Raging fire destroyed the uninsured building


What kind of fire?


Raging= present participle


What kind of building?


Uninsured= past participle

Infinitives

Is formed by placing "to" in front of a present tense verb. "to work", " to read"


Infinitives can disguise themselves as nouns, adjectives, or adverbs


Example:


Adjective: comes after the noun it describes.


Ex: It is time to read the Giver.


Adverb: Usually comes at the beginning or end of a sentence.


Ex: To read, first we need a book.


Nouns: To read a book, is a relaxing activity
