Onset

The beginning consonant or consonants in a syllable up to the vowel in a word

rime

The part of a syllable that includes the vowel sound and any consonant sounds coming after.

r-controlled vowel

When a vowel letter is followed by the letter r making the vowel neither long nor short.

Grapheme

A letter or combination of letters that represents a phoneme.

Syllable

A unit of pronunciation consisting of one vowel sound alone or one vowel sound along with one or more consonants.

Dipthong

A vowel sound made up of a blend of two vowel sounds (sometimes called a glide) in immediate sequence and pronounced in one syllable.

Diagraph

To letters that stand for one phoneme.

Closed Syllable

Any syllable that ends with a consonant phoneme. (e.g. the ball in football)

Schwa

A sound closely resembling a short u that commonly occurs in unstressed syllables, represented by an upside-down e in the dictionary.

Affix

A linguistic element that is not an independent word but is added to the beginning and/or end of a word and modifies its meaning.
