Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Environmental needs of the area:

-Flooding prevention

-Conservation

-Regeneration

-Sustainable management

Socio-economic needs of the area:

-Affordable housing

-Employment

-Reduced waste

-Reduced congestion

-Water resources

-Food supply

How is the balance between the socio-economic and environmental needs resolved by planning and management in this coastal area?

In 1997, the ICZM was introduced and aimed to ensure sustainable coastal development in a coral sea environment.

The ICZM seeks, over the long-term, to balance environmental, socio-economic, cultural and recreational objectives, done by:

Monitoring, Beach Tourism Control, Increasing Biodiversity and Improvements on Habitats.

Monitoring:

-Coral problems monitored by experts.

-Water quality + beach changes above+below water line monitored to show how sediment is being moved.

-3 monitoring cameras.

-A event aims to engage Gulf nations in coral conservation.

Gov. investment in environmental audits and monitoring.

-Scientists identifying trends (e.g. how grain size has changed).

Beach Tourism Control:

-No fishing without permits to prevent over fishing.

-No litter dropping to reduce effects of tourism on the marine ecosystem.

Increasing Biodiversity and Improvements on Habitats:

-To create new sites where coral can colonise and create a reef.

-Reduction of pollution from construction, residential areas and hotels.

North Norfolk Coastline

Socio-economic needs:

-Protect the environment as a source of revenue from tourism + recreation --> especially salt marshes, beaches + dunes.

-Improve access to area for shipping+fishing boats, and vehicles: lack motorway access which limits inwards investment by businesses

-Maintain coastal defences to reduce the risk of flooding of important historic / residential / business centres.

-Diversifying the economy: away from relying on seasonal tourism and agriculture to a range of skilled, service jobs to increase wealth in the area and reduce out migration of young people.

-Build affordable housing: grown as migration of retirees and growth of 2nd homes.
