Who Will Benefit from Psych Skills Training?

Most people believe that it will be best for advanced athletes, but in fact research shows that it is best for new athletes. for new athletes, it must be adjusted though (fewer goals, shorter sessions, etc.)

Who Should Lead it?

A notable, qualified sports psychologist should create and lead it, but it should also be carried out by coaches (best if they attend every session)

Organizational Empowerment

Sports Psychologist trains one or more qualified people to carry out the PST ---> best when the SP can't attend every meetings

Best Time to Implement

During off seasons or preseason is best, worst time is once competitive season has started.

Time Dedicated

First exposure --> 3-6 months, new mental skills need 15-30 mins 3-5 times per week (longer, fewer practices if SP can't be there)

What is the Key?

Self Regulation is key --> where people manage their own behaviours directed towards specific goals.

Six Phases: 1. Problem identification2. Commitment to change3. Develop specific plans 4. Set goals5. Initiate actions6. Goal attainment

Preaching the Importance of Mental Training

Ask athletes how much of their performance is mental. Discuss benefits and show data

Assess Psychological Strengths and Weaknesses

Find out with interviews, psych inventories, and behavioural observations. Provide written feedback on their strengths and weaknesses. Athletes must agree and accept the needs assessment.

What Skills to Introduce and Work on?

Because of the lack of unlimited time, we have to focus on a select number of skills. There is no set answer as to which ones to work on, you must tailor it for the group.

The methods used to focus on them: goal setting, imagery, psychical relaxation, thought control

Evaluation

Must be critical and assess the strengths and weaknesses of the content. Ask questions. This is co continuous process but must have a start and finish assessment as well to put it all in perspective.

Pointers 1

Personal Responsibility: peak performance is controllable (it is in your hands to achieve)

Flexible and Individualized: change variable when needed, don't just stick with one path. Use handouts, videos, etc.

Pointers 2

Goal Setting and Journals: allows for individualized goals, and discovers successful strategies.

Pre-comp and Comp Plans: plan ahead to craft the ultimate peak performance

Pointers 3

Observe Practices and competitions whenever possible, monitor your behaviour, emphasize strengths as competition nears.

What to Consider Ethically

Conflicts with confidentiality, personal values, professional ethics, dual relationships, etc.

Problem Areas

Gain the trust of the athletes (build relationships!), maintain full contact with athletes throughout competitive season.
