Solid- What determines volume and shape for solid? Describe how the particles in a solid are moving.

Solids have a fixed shape and occupy a fixed volume. They move slowly with less energy, they only slightly move, and they are very close together.

Liquid- What determines volume and shape for liquids? Describe how the particles in a liquid are moving.

Liquids, because they flow, can occupy whatever shape their container has, so they do not have a fixed shape. Faster than a solid with medium energy and have medium space between each other.

Gas- What determines volume and shape for gas. Describe how the particles in a gas are moving.

Gases can also flow, so occupy the shape of their whole container. They do not have a fixed shape. They move fast with a lot of energy and have lots of space between them.

What are the four main points of Kinetic Molecular Theory?

1. All matter is made of particles

2. There is empty space between particles

3. Particles are constantly moving and colliding with each other and the walls of their container

4. Energy makes the particles move. The more energy they have faster and farther apart the particles get from each other

What is Kinetic energy? What would be a way to give something more kinetic energy.

Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. Movement of energy by shaking the container or by making particles in container hot.

What is the different between thermal energy and temperature?

Thermal- The total amount of movement.

Temperature- The average kinetic energy of the particles in an object.

A hot pot touches a cool table. What direction does the heat flow?

Hot to cold.

When an object is given more thermal energy it will...expand or contract?

Expand

When an object has thermal energy taken away it will...expand or contract?

Contract

How do you change the physical state of a material? (Ex. solid to liquid, gas to solid).

Melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation, deposition, and sublimation.

What happens when the gas inside a container has less pressure than the gas outside the container?

In Implosion!

What happens when the gas inside a container has greater pressure than the gas outside the container?

An explosion!

Which state(s) of matter are compressible?

Gas

Which state(s) of matter are incompressible?

Liquids and Solids

An object may appear to be compressed, but its volume has not decreased. What happened to the object instead of compression?

It deforms

What are two factors that determine a fluid's viscosity? Explain how they determine the viscosity.

Temperature because heat has high energy and cold has low energy. Particle size/shape because of flow rate.

When you heat a liquid, what happens to the viscosity? What happens when you heat a gas?

Liquid; viscosity decreases.

Gas; viscosity increases.

When you cool a liquid, what happens to the viscosity? What happens when you cool a gas?

Liquid; viscosity increases.

Gas; viscosity decreases.

An adhesive fluid will stick strongly to itself or other objects?

Other objects

A cohesive fluid will stick strongly to itself or other objects?

Itslef

Is surface tension a property of adhesion or cohesion? It makes it appear like the liquid has a _____________________.

Cohesion. It makes it appear like the liquid has a thin skin or membrane.
