Soldering

Joining two metals together by melting a tin based alloy between them. Not as strong as brazing or welding. Generally used to attach a component to a printed circuit board by melting solder to make a permanent join.

Spelter

An alloy of zinc.

Sustainable

A sustainable process or material is one that can be used without causing permanent damage to the environment or using upfinite resources . eg. Sustainable wood comes from forests where fast growing trees are chopped down and replaced.

Scale

The ratio of the size of the design in the drawing to the size of the finished item.

Synthetic

Man made – a manufactured material

SMA - Shape memory alloy

A metal, that, after being bent out of shape, will return to its original shape when heated above its transition temperature.

Tacky

Slightly sticky

Tapered

Something that gets narrower at one end

Tarnishing

When a metal surface loses its shine and becomesdull. Tarnishing happens because of reactions with the air.

Thermoplastics

Plastics that can be melted and remoulded over and over again.

Thermosetting

Thermosetting plastics are ones that undergo a chemical change when heated which makes them hard and rigid. They can’t be remoulded.

Tolerance

How much a component can differ in size from its ideal measurements before the product is affected.

Technology push

Technology push - How advancements in technology are used to produce new products.

Tolerance

Accepted range of difference from standard.

Toxic

A toxic substance is one that is harmful to health

Veneer

Veneer - A thin layer of high quality wood.

Vacuum forming

Forming a thermoplastic sheet over a mould, using heat and a vacuum.

Warped

When something has changed shape, eg. Untreated wood warps after time.

Working drawing

A detailed scale drawing that shows all the components of each part of a product, the materials from which components are to be made. Etc.
