Stochastic Effects
Those which no threshold dose of radiation exists, cancer genetic effects, they are random in nature. Reguardless of dose some will experience effect.
Deterministic Effects (Non-stochastic)
Those which a threshold dose is assumed, cataracts, skin erythema, and sterility. As dose increases severity of the effect increases.
Dose Limits
Radiation exposure limits pertinent to the protection of radiation workers.
Whole Body and Certain tissues and organs.
Annual Effective Dose Limit for Occupational Exposure
50 mSv
5 rem
5000 mrem
ALARA
As Low As Reasonably Achievable
3 Principles of Personal Exposure Reduction
1) Time--reduce amount of time spent in the vacinity of source.
2) Distance--increase distance between individual and source.
3) Shielding--use shielding material to attenuate radiation.
Occupational Dose Limits for Embryo/Fetus/Pregnancy
5 mSv/term
0.5 rem
500 mrem
Primary Barriers
Can be struck by the primary or useful beam, scattered, and leakage radiation.
Secondary Barriers
Can only be struck by scattered and leakage radiation.
