Matter

Anything that has mass and takes up space

Chemistry

The study of the properties of matter and how matter changes

Substance

A single kind of matter that is pure, meaning it always has a specific makeup.

Physical properties

Characteristics of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance.

Chemical Properties

Characteristics of a pure substance that describes it's ability to change into different substances

Element

A pure substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances by chemical or physical means

Atom

The basic particles from which all elements are made

Chemical Bond

The force of attraction between two atoms

Molecules

Groups of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds.

Compound

A pure substance made of two or more elements chemical combines in a set ratio.

Chemical formula

A formula that shows the elements in the compound and the ratio of atoms

Mixtures

Made of two or more substances that are together in the place but are not chemically combined

Heterogeneous Mixture

A mixture in which you can see the different parts

Homogeneous mixture

A mixture in which the substances are so evenly mixed that you can see the different parts

Chemical Change

Any change in matter that produces one or more substances.

Physical change

Any change that alters the from or appearance of matter doesn't make any substance in the matter into a different substance

Energy

The ability to do work or cause change

Temperature

A measure of the average energy of random motion in particles.

Law of conservation of mass

Matter is not created or destroyed in any chemical or physical change.

Thermal energy

The total energy of all of the particles in an object

Endothermic change

A change in which energy is taken in

Kinetic energy

The energy of matter in motion

Electromagnetic energy

A form of kinetic energy that travels through space through waves

Electrical energy

A form of kinetic energy in which the energy of eclectically charged particles move from one place to another

Potential Energy

The energy an object has because of its position

Chemical Energy

A former of potential Energy in which the internal energy is stored in the chemical bond between the atoms

Solution

An example of a homogenous mixture when substances dissolve does not have to be a liquid

Exothermic Energy

A change in which energy is given off or released
