Motor Control
Field of study aimed at understanding the processes that lead to the execution of human movement and the factors that affect to the execution of these processes
Motor Learning
Field of study aimed at understanding the way in which the processes that sub-serve movement are developed and the factors which facilitate or inhibit this development
hypothesis
a tentative prediction of behavior under a set of conditions
empirical
based on observation and/or literature rather than theory
induction
the logical reasoning from isolated facts to a more general description
bottom up reasoning
the development of hypotheses based on observations and induction. typically the hypothesis is derived as a result of organizing or contrasting observations and the conditions under which they arise.
law
a statement describing a sequence of events in nature or human activities that has been observed to occur with unvarying uniformity under the same conditions
theory
a proposed explanation or statement of the processes that account for the lawful phenomenon
postulates
assumptions based on theory and not grounded in fact. a postulate is a basic principle derived without proof
theoretical
based on theory rather than observation and/or literature
deduction
the process of reasoning from a general principle or theory to an unknown, from general to specific, or from postulate to testable hypothesis
top down reasoning
the devlopment of hypotheses based on theory and deduction. typically the hypothesis is derived as a result of the predictions of a theory
deduction
the process of reasoning from a general principle or theory to an unknown, from general to specific, or from postulate to testable hypothesis
top down reasoning
the devlopment of hypotheses based on theory and deduction. typically the hypothesis is derived as a result of the predictions of a theory
applied research
research aimed at testing potential solutions (hypotheses) to problems that present themselves in real world settings. the tasks utilized in applied research are typically real world tasks and the testing occurs in real world environments
basic research
research involved in testing hypotheses in laboratory and field setting using tasts specifically designed to involve/isolate the processes and/or environmental demands under study. these tasks tend to be relatively simpple so that experimental process can progress quickly, novel so the influence of past experiences are minimized and artificial so that the process or environmental condition of interest can be isolated.
experiment
an investigation in which a researcher manipulates one variable while measuring its effect on some other variable
independent variable
the manipulated variable in an experiment. the change in the dependent variable is assumed to be a result of the manipulation of the independent variable
dependent variable
the variable that is measure. in an experiment the change in the dependent variable is assumed to be a result of the manipulation introduced by the experimenter
acquisition
the period of time during which experiences are provided that are thought to enhance learning
retention
delayed practice experiences test or game on a task that was experienced during acquisitions. if we practice a task and then are tested at a later time on that task, the test would be considered a retention test
transfer
delayed practice experiences test or game on a variation of the task or on another task that was not experienced during acquisition
experimental group
the group of subjects who's performance is influenced by an experimental manipulation. in an experiment, the control and experimental groups must be treated in exactly the same way except for the one variable under study
