MATTER

Anything that has mass and volume. All objects are made out of matter. Solid, liquid and gas are the 3 states of matter at normal temperatures.

PARTICLE

A small piece of matter. Particles include atoms, molecules and ions.

SOLID

A state of matter that keeps it's shape. The particles in solids are close together and remain in a fixed position.

LIQUID

The state of matter which the substance is in the form of a runny fluid. A liquid sinks to the bottom of a container, maintains volume and has a flat surface.


The particles in a liquid are closely packed by are able to move freely past each other.

GAS

A state of matter in which the particles spread out and completely fill their container.

EVAPORATING

The process of a liquid turns into a gas by heating.

FREEZING

The process of a liquid changing into a solid by cooling.

SUBLIMATION

The process of a solid changing into a gas without first changing into a liquid.

MELTING

The process of a solid changing into a liquid by heating.

CONDENSING

The process of a gas changing into a liquid by cooling.

SOLUTE

The soluble substance that dissolves in a solvent form a solution.

SOLVENT

The liquid in which a solute dissolves to form a solution.

SOLUTION

A mixture in which a solute is dissolved in a solvent.
