MATTER |
Anything that has mass and volume. All objects are made out of matter. Solid, liquid and gas are the 3 states of matter at normal temperatures. |
PARTICLE |
A small piece of matter. Particles include atoms, molecules and ions. |
SOLID |
A state of matter that keeps it's shape. The particles in solids are close together and remain in a fixed position. |
LIQUID |
The state of matter which the substance is in the form of a runny fluid. A liquid sinks to the bottom of a container, maintains volume and has a flat surface. The particles in a liquid are closely packed by are able to move freely past each other. |
GAS |
A state of matter in which the particles spread out and completely fill their container. |
EVAPORATING |
The process of a liquid turns into a gas by heating. |
FREEZING |
The process of a liquid changing into a solid by cooling. |
SUBLIMATION |
The process of a solid changing into a gas without first changing into a liquid.
MELTING |
The process of a solid changing into a liquid by heating. |
CONDENSING |
The process of a gas changing into a liquid by cooling. |
SOLUTE |
The soluble substance that dissolves in a solvent form a solution. |
SOLVENT |
The liquid in which a solute dissolves to form a solution. |
SOLUTION |
A mixture in which a solute is dissolved in a solvent. |
