6 Functions of Integumentary System |
1-Protection 2-Thermoregulation 3-Immune Function 4-Vitamin D 5-Excretes and Absorbs Substances 6-Communication |
3 Principal Layers of Tissues that comprise Integument |
Epithelial Tissue(epidermis) Connective Tissue(dermis) Areolar+Adipose Tissue(hypodermis) |
3 Principle Layers of Epidermis |
1. Stratum basale— keratinocytes capable of dividing — melanocytes — touch and pressure detecting cells 2. Stratum spinosum — keratinocytes that are non-dividing and beginning to fill with the protein keratin — some dendritic cells that function in immunity — some melanocytes 3. Stratum corneum— composed of corneocytes — completely dead and filled with the protein keratin — cells slough off in a process called de-squamation |
2 Principle Layers of Dermis |
1- Papillary 2- Reticular |
What tissue comprises the hypodermis and is the embryonic origin? |
loose connective tissue called areolar tissue/ bands of collagen accompanied by adipose tissue derived from the mesoderm |
What type of tissues comprise the epidermis and what are their embryonic origins? |
Epidermal Strata(5) Derived from Ectoderm |
Name and characterize four (4) types of glands that are associated with the cutaneous membrane. |
-Sebaceous Glands -Sweat (sudoriferous) glands — the most common type of skin glands. Sweat glands are classified as either eccrine or apocrine -Ceruminous Glands |
