What is the purpose of a muscle length test?
To determine if the range of a muscle is normal, limited or excessive.
If a muscle has excessive length, generally it would be considered strong or weak?
Weak. Long muscles allow adaptive shortening to take place on the opposite side.
If a muscle is short, generally it would be considered strong or weak?
strong. Short muscles maintain opposing muscles in a lengthened position.
What is the difference between ROM and MM length?
ROM= the amount a JOINT can move in degrees.
MM Length=the length of the muscle. Both are expressed in degrees and measured.
How do you test the length of a muscle?
You need to stretch them. You need to increase the distance between the origin and the insertion. We are elongating muscles in the directions directly opposite to that of the muscle action.
Does a 2-joint muscle have sufficient length to extend through full ROM fully?
Yes, but only one of the joints at a time. The other joint must have the muscle on slack.
Name some things you want to do or watch for when testing for muscle length?
* Perform test on a hard, flat surface
* Do not allow substitutions
* Position pt correctly
* Support the limb being tested
* Be aware of pain, end feel and joint positions
Name 5 end feels
* Hard
* Soft
* Capsular
* Empty
* Springy
What end feels are considered normal?
Hard, soft, & capsular
Which of those end feels is NOT A ROM end field?
Springy
How would you test the muscle length of the Pectoralis minor? Major? Latissimus dorsi? Teres major? Internal/external rotators?
Pg 307, - 311 in Kendall
What kind of tests would your do for the hamstrings?
Forward bend test would be a quick shotgun test.
What kind of tests would you do for the hip flexors?
Thomas
What kind of test would you do to test the Tensor fasciae latae or I-T band
Ober (bent) or modified ober (straight leg)
How do you document muscle lengths? What are the "grades" you give a muscle?
Limited
- mild
- moderate
- Severe
Normal
Excessive
- Mild increase
- moderate increase
- severe increase
