Parsing

A stage in language comprehension, the process by which the words in the message are transformed into a mental representation of the combined meaning of the words, after the perceptual processes.

Utilization

A stage in language comprehension, after parsing in which the representatio of the sentence's meaning is used.

Constituent

A phrase unit, processing unit with limited access to the phrase maintained as long as its meaning is processed.

Center-embedded sentence

A type of sentence where one clause is embedded in another, such sentences are easier to interpret in they include pronouns.

Garden-path sentences

Sententes that are ambiguous, leading to one path first and then having the following contradict the interpretation.

Principle of minimal attachment

A factor in how ambiguous sentences are resolved, the interpretation which causes minimal complication of its phrase structure is preferred.

Ambiguity in sentences that is resolved later in the sentence, giving the sentence only one possible interpretation.
