Modal Auxiliaries Express Modalities (can, must, may, should, and would)
Modals express modalities or attitudes about the activity in the sentence. They have complete conjugational systems similar to other weak verbs (see pp. 157-9).
dürfen = permission können = ability mögen = desire müssen = necessity sollen = obligation wollen = volition NB: möchten, the present subjective form of mögen, is a high-frequency verb form expressing intention. It means would like to. |
Modals and the Dependent Infinitive
Generally occur in combination with an infinitive. The modal will stand in second position and the infinitive will stand in final position.
Modals can occur with present, past, passive, and implied infinitives. Modalities are frequently expressed in the future tense with werden as the helping verb and a double infinitive in the final position of the clause. If used without a dependent infinitive, you will often find das as the direct object and the verb tun implied. z.B., Das sollst du nicht, You should not do that. NB: mögen + object without infinitive = to like; möchten + object without infinitive = would like |
