Active ROM

Pt perform the exercise to move the joint without any assisstance to the muscles surrounding the joint

Passive ROM

Therapist or equipment moves the joiny through the range of motion with no effort from the pt

Crepitus

Grating, popping, crackling sound, may be heard or palpated

Myalgia

Muscular pain or tenderness, especially when diffuse and nonspecific

Contracture

Abnormal shortening of muscle tissue, rendering the muscle highly resistant to passive stretching due to lack of joint use

Atrophy

A wasting away; a decrease in size of a cell, tissue, organ, or part

Hypertrophy

Enlargement or overgrowth of an organ or part due to increase in size of its constituent cells

Osteoporosis

Literally means "porous bones" it occurs when bones lose an excessive amount of their protein and mineral content, particularly calcium. Over time, bone mass, and therefore bone strength, is decreased

Arthritis

Inflammation of a joint

Vertigo

Rotational spinning sensation

Objective

Do you feel as if the room spins?

Subjective

Do you feel that you are spinning?

Syncope

Faint; sudden loss of strength, a temporary loss of consciousness due to lack of cerebral blood flow

Dysphasia

Impairment in speech consisting of lack of coordination and inability to arrange words in their proper order

Aphasia

Without speech: true language disturbance

Expressive

Inability to produce words, either spoken or in written form (difficulty producing language )

Receptive

Ability to produce words but with frequent errors in the cgoice of appropriate words or in the creation of words (difficulty understanding language )

Ataxia

Impairment of coordination of muscular activity

Glasgow coma scale

Neurocheck; quantitative tools to assess LOC; test 3 areas eye, motor, verbal responses of the pt., cumulative score of 15; 7 or below indicates coma

Tremors

Involuntary contraction of opposing muscle groups resulting in rhythmic movement of one or more joints (Involuntary shaking, vibrating, or trembling)

Seizures

Altered or loss of consciousness, involuntary muscle movement, and sensory disturbances; course, duration, motor activity, associated signs, AURA, postictal phase, precipitating factors

Tandem walking

Test cerebellar function; walking heel -to-toe; accentuates problems with coordination

Paresis

Partial or incomplete paralysis, or weakness

Dementia

Loss of brain function. Not a single disease. Refers to a group of illnesses that involve memory, behavior, learning, and communicating problems. Problems are progressive

Paresthesia

Abnormal skin sensation (burning, numbness, tingling, prickling, crawling)

Romberg test

Test cerebellar functions; stand at client's side; client stands feet together, arms at sifr: have them close their eyes and hold position; wait about 20 seconds; slight swaying may occur;

Deep tendon reflex

Knee jerk-patellar reflex

Babinski

Dorsiflexion of the great toe and fanning of all toes; should not occur after 2 1/2 of age

Paralysis

Decreased or loss of motor function due to a problem with motor nerve or muscle fibers

Level of consciousness

Neurochecks: alert, lethargic, obtunded, stuporous, coma

PERRLA

Pupils, equal, round, reactive to light and accommodation; neurochecks

Clonus

Rapidly alternating involuntary contractions ans relaxation of a muscle in response to sudden stretch

Proprioception

Pertain to the nervous system's ability to maintain posture, balance, and coordination, awareness of body position

Agnosia

Loss of ability to reconize importance of sensory impressions

Apraxia

Impairment of the ability to carry out purposeful movement

Decerebrate rigidity

Arms stiffly extended, adducted, internally rotated; legs stiffly extended, plantar flexed; extension-abnormal on GCS

Decorticate rigidity

Arms adducted and flexed, wrist amd fingers flexed; legs extended, plantar flexed; flexion-abnormal on GCS

Fasciculation

Observable, localized, uncoordinated, uncontrollable twitching of a single muscle group innervated by a single motor nerve fiber or filament

Flaccidity

Loss of muscle tone; weak, soft, flabby-absent DTR

Spasticity

Involuntary, sudden movement or muscular contraction-increased reflexes

Nuchal rigidity

Stiffness in cerviacal neck area

Nystagmus

Slight oscillating movements of the eyes whem client is asked to hold gaze in one of the six cardinal positions. End point or extreme lateral gaze oscillation occurs normally

Neurovascular assessment

Circulation, motion, and sensation;

6 P's

Pulselessness, paresthesia, pallor, puffiness, pain, paralysis
