Augustine of Hippo
354-430; great theologian; wrote during the time when the Roman Empire was newly Christian; thought the Jews misunderstood the Bible and believed the reason why the Jews were suffering was because they rejected Christ, it is divine punishment; doesn't support the violence towards the Jews, argues that Jews have a place within Christian society; believed Jews can exist but exist in a miserable state to show their superiority to the Christians (that is why he wants to keep the Jews alive); it is largely about emphasizing Christian superiority against the Jews.
Doctrine of Witness
Augustine of Hippo believed they should not kill or get rid of the Jews because they testify to the superiority of Christianity; it's all about emphasizing Christian superiority against Jews.
Theodosian Code
compiled in 429-438 (5th century CE) under Theodosius II; this code changes the Jews' legal status; a principal of toleration was enshrined in the code and the code enshrines protection for the Jews; Jewish religious practice was permitted and tolerated and the code stated that the Jews were not allowed to be forcibly converted or assaulted; now Jews exercise jurisdiction over Jews in areas like birth, deaths, marriages, ritual purity, food ,etc. While they were protected under this code they still must remain submissive to Christianity, can't build new synagogues, can't convert others to Judaism, can't judge Christians, and this ultimately leads to prohibiting Jews from owning Christian slaves (because they are worried the Jews are going to convert them since when slaves go into a Jewish home they are to be converted and circumcised)
Ecclesia and Synagoga
from the 13th century; their purpose is to show the superiority of the Christians and what happens to those who reject them; shows how Christianity is superior to Judaism; Ecclesia represents the church and Synagoga represents the Synagogue; Ecclesia is wearing a crown on her head, her eyes are not covered, the cup she is holding symbolizes the new covenant with Christ, she is standing tall and proud, the cross on top of her staff signals she is Ecclesia; Synagoga's eyes are covered (clinging to the outdated laws that are falling and is blind to the truth), her crown is sitting on the ground (Jewish kingdom has fallen; signals shift in power relations), stone tablets in her hand signals that she is Synagoga, she is hunched over and her posture shows she is inferior to Ecclesia.
