Emphasize the Importance
PD is the #1 diagnosed disease in canine and feline practice 75-85% of all dogs and cats will have some degree of PD by age 3
Why isn't professional cleaning enough?
After a cleaning a pellicle forms (sticky layer of salivary glycoproteins)
Pellicle --plaque (bacT colonize)--tartar/calculus
What is the goal of daily tooth brushing?
To disrupt the pellicle before it has time to mature, thus leading to tartar/calculus
What is a good age to start brushing?
8-10 weeks of age (young enough to be curious and allow owners to work in their mouths)
What is the Gold Standard/best home care regimen?
Daily tooth brushing with a toothbrush with bristles (so these bristles can clean what is below the gumline (gingival sulcus))
Start slow, a few teeth at a time and work up to the whole mouth. You don't need to brush the insides of the teeth.
You could even use tuna juice with cats and peanut butter for dogs
Why not use human toothpastes?
They contain detergents and fluoride which should not be swallowed. Additionally, the foaming action of many human toothpastes may be offensive to some animals
Since it is the mechanical action of the toothbrush that removes the plaque, the choice of toothpaste is not critical
What are oral rinses?
The most common active ingredient is chlorhexidine. Chlorhexidine has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties
While it may reduce plaque and gum disease, it has been associated with increased mineralization of plaque. It can also cause a brown staining on teeth which may be removed with professional polishing.
What are the 2 main ways dental diets help reduce tartar build up?
1. Either by mechanical cleansing of the teeth
2. Chemical alteration of the oral envirnoment by hexametaphosphate or other calculus retarding substances

There are 11 diets that have the VOHC seal. Specially formulated kibble can act as a mechanical abrasive as it does not shatter until the tooth penetrates a significant portion of it. These diets are normally intended and formulated to be used as a normal maintainence diet.
What chew toys are appropriate?
Ones that are not hard; tennis balls are also not good choices as they can wear the teeth
What to know about water additives....
New water additives are becoming available which contain xylitol. A recent study showed that xylitol added to drinking water was effective in the reduction of plaque and calculus in cats.'
Owners should exercise caution to follow directions as excess xylitol may be associated with toxicity.
What is the Porphyromonas (Periodontal) Vaccine?
Was released by Pfizer in 2007 for use in dogs. The targeted microorganisms include the anaerobic bacteria responsible for bone destruction in advanced periodontal disease.
What are the 3 bacteria species present in 75% of all periodontal cases?
Porphyrmoonas denticanis, Porphyromonas salivosa, Porphyromonas gulae (these are in the porphyromonas vaccine)
These invasive anaerobic bacteria and vaccination against them helps to reduce bone loss in more severe cases of periodontal disease
How is the Poryphoromonas vaccine given?
At the time of a healthy mouth (1 week after cleaning or in a young patient), then boostered 2 weeks later...then given annually (at this time this vaccine is discontinued)**?**
What is Oravet?
It is a waxy polymer, that when applied to professionally cleaned and treated teeth will adhere by electrostatic attraction.
In doing so, they inhibit bacterial adhesion to the tooth. While other products may remove plaque and tartar, waxy polymers constitute a plaque retention prevention system which is complete and drug-free
What is the Veterinary Oral Health Council?
VOHC is an independent body which reviews research on the effectiveness of veterinary dental products
The VOHC exists to recognize products that meet preset standards of plaque and calculus retardation in dogs and cats
Does the VOHC test the products they approve of?
No, they do not test the products themselves and it is not a regulatory agency
VOHC will take action if FDA or other appropriate regulatory authority finds fault with a class of products or a specific product that is included on the VOHC accepted list
True
