What is a Joint?
the movable or fixed place or part where two bones or elements of a skeleton join.
synarthrosis?
A form of articulation in which the bones are rigidly joined by fibrous tissue. Also called synarthrodia .
amphiarthrosis?
a joint permitting only slight motion, as that between the vertebrae.
diarthrosis?
a form of articulation that permits maximal motion, as the knee joint.
tendon?
a cord or band of dense, tough, inelastic, white, fibrous tissue, serving to connect a muscle with a bone or part; sinew.
ligament?
a band of tissue, usually white and fibrous, serving to connect bones, hold organs in place,
bursae?
a pouch, sac, or vesicle, esp. a sac containing synovia, to facilitate motion, as between a tendon and a bone.
synovial fluid?
a transparent viscid lubricating fluid secreted by a membrane of an articulation, bursa, or tendon sheath called also joint fluid synovia
articular cartilage?
The cartilage covering the articular surfaces of the bones forming a synovial joint.
menisci?
a disk of cartilage between the articulating ends of the bones in a joint.
rheumatoid arthritis?
a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation of the joints, frequently accompanied by marked deformities, and ordinarily associated with manifestations of a general, or systemic, affliction.
gouty arthritis?
arthritis associated with gout and caused by the deposition of urate crystals in the articular cartilage of joints.
dislocation?
Displacement of a body part, especially the temporary displacement of a bone from its normal position.
subluxation?
a partial dislocation, as of a joint; sprain.
What is gliding joints ?(flattened surfaces)
- bones slide over each other
- limited monoaxial joint
- ex: between carpal bones, tarsal bones, vertebrocostal joints.
What are hinge joints?
- permit angular motion in a
single plane
- monoaxial joint
- ex: elbow joint, knee joint,
interphalangeal joints
What are Pivot Joints (rotation only)?
- allow one bone to rotate
around another (monoaxial
rotation)
- ex: atlantoaxial joint,
proximal radioulnar joint
What are saddle Joints?
- permit one bone to slide in 2
directions
- monoaxial rotation
- ex: trapeziometacarpal joint
at the base of the thumb
What are Ellipsoidal (condyloid) joints?
- oval convex surface on one
bone fits into a similarly shaped depression
- Biaxial joints
- ex: radiocarpal joint,
metacarpophalangeal and
metatarsophalangeal joints
What are Ball and socket joints?
- head fits within a cuplike
depression
- ex: shoulder joint, hip joint
- multiaxial joint
