The Alien and Sedition Acts are rightfully called some of the most controversial laws in American history. Brefly explain these two acts. Then, in a sentence or so, explain the anti-federalist reaction.
Alien Act: makes it harder for forgein citizens to become American. Instead of 5 years it takes 14 to become citizen. President can expell dangerous aliens and imprison, arrest or banish any aliens w/out charge or appeal.

Sedition Act: govern't can prosecute anyone who "conspires in opposition" to govern't or who "write, print or publish" anything false, scandalous, or melicious.
Anti-Federalist think this is slap in the face of the Bill of Rights. Very controversial. Govern't is too strong.
John Adams has been labeled a mediocre president. How did his actions in the "quasi war" with France help (or hurt) his reputation? Breifly explain.
Adams decides not to declare war, but raises the Navy because French frigets out number American greatly. Navy captures about 100 French ships. At the time American's wanted to go to war, but Adams realized such a new nation could not afford to. In today's terms the "quasi ware" helped Adams, but at the time it did not.
Briefly explain the First Barbary War of 1801-1805. How sucessful was this conflict for the US?
1. TJ doesn't want to pay bribes to Tripoli anymore.
2. Tripoli declares war on US.
3.US sends ships to blockaid Barbary coast lines.
4. USS Philadelphia and 100 men are captured.
5. Stephen Decatur manages to get past Tripoli and burns USS Philadelphia.
6. volunteers try to sail suicide ship into Tripoli harbor.
7. Marines hike across desert and attack Tripoli from opposite side.
8. TJ agress to pay $60,000 to get American's captured back and war is over.
Not to sucessful for US.
Briefly explain what life was like for free blacks in the North. How much better was it than life as a free black in the South and why?
majority of blacks are free in north. as slavery decreased restrictions on blacks increased. white's wouldn't hire blacks. can't vote, go to school, which churches, etc. live in slums and own least desirable lands. scared of bein kidnapped or sent back to south.

Freed men in south faced same challenges, however they were always in more fear of being "kidnapped".
Briefly compare and contrast the lives of urban slaves and plantation/farm slaves in the South.
Urban: skilled laborers. not isolated. masters had less control over them. had a bit of freedom. more mobility and freedom so more opportunity.

plantation: isolated. field workers. no freedom. no mobility. etc.
