-(164 BCE)-Judas’s Clan of rebellious Jews who wished to get rid of Seleucids rule. Their rebellion was successful and Jewish law was reinstituted.
VESPASIAN
(67 CE)- The general conquered Transjordan, western Judea, Idumea, Samaria, and Jericho. He later was made emperor.
QUMRAN
The Caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found, near the Dead Sea.

(167 BCE)- Ruler during the Helenization of Jews
• Conquered Jerusalem, banned circum., Sabbath and Torah reading, and turned the Temple pagan.
CYRUS THE GREAT
(539 BCE)- Persian King, maker of Cyrus cylinder.
• As the Babylonian empire was falling apart, Persia became more powerful. Cyrus conquered Babylon, and let Jews return to Zion because he believed in religious freedom
DIASPORA
Used to describe the Jews living outside of Judea, like in Egypt or Spain.
HEROD THE GREAT
-(37 BCE)- Converted Jew king who was close with Rome, brutal towards enemies, and united Judea.
• Herod protected Jews in Diaspora, but when the Romans didn’t like the way he was treating enemies, he made his people swear their allegiance to Rome.
JUDAH HA-NASI
(117 CE)- Nasi: In charge of taxes, laws, Diaspora communications connected with Rome—Redaction of the MISHNAH

Roman administrators in Judea who were crooked

-(450)- Scribe-Reads 5 Books to Jews and Translates them to Aramaic, to get people back to the covenant.-so they’re now centered on TEXT

Jewish commander in fight agst Rome and Historian who told the story of the year 70 destruction of the temple.
