• As the Babylonian empire was falling apart, Persia became more powerful. Cyrus conquered Babylon, and let Jews return to Zion because he believed in religious freedom

• Herod protected Jews in Diaspora, but when the Romans didn’t like the way he was treating enemies, he made his people swear their allegiance to Rome.
