The difference between "こと" and "の" |
"こと" represents the whole of an action or event, while "の" represents only one action or event. For example, imagine "こと" is an album with lots of photos, "の" is a single photo. Ex. 食べることが好きです I love anything to eat 食べるのが好きです 海でサンドイッチを食べるのが好きです I love to eat sandwiches on the beach. (For specific information like places, food, etc.) |

You can use verbs such as 食べる and 読む、in their te-forms with the helping verb いる to describe actions in progress.

You can also use a ~ています sentence to describe what a person does by occupation or by habit. |

~ている (Result of a Change) |
Verbs in this section see changes from one state to another. If you get married, or 結婚する、for example, your status changes from being single to being married. With these verbs, ている describes the result of a change. A change took place in the past, and is significance still remains until the present moment.
change verbs ている = result of change 山下先生は結婚しています Professor Yamashita is married. (= state resulting from getting married; note the sentence does NOT mean Prof. Yamashita is getting married) ゆいさんは窓の近くに座っています。 (= state resulting from seating herself there.) |
