What was the cause?

The sudden movement of the Pacific tectonic plate under the North American plate caused a massive earthquake.This earthquake struck offshore of Japan, along a subduction zone where two of Earth's tectonic plates collide. This created waves more than ten metres high.

What were the impacts of the tsunami?

- buildings built to withstand earthquakes were destroyed.


- it destroyed Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. Initially, engineers couldn't stop the leakage, and even after they did, it took months to completely stop emissions. Radiation showed up in local milk and vegetables,and briefly appeared in Tokyo's drinking water. It continued to leak into the Pacific Ocean, raising levels to 4,000 times the legal limit.
