Corrupt bargin

- a plan by Henry Clay, Daniel Webster and NicholasBiddle. The plan was created to prevent Jackson from being re-elected intooffice. The plan was for Biddle to apply for the Bank charter early, whichcongress would approve and then Jackson would veto. They knew Jackson wouldveto the Bank of the U.S. because it only helped the wealthy class and Jacksonwas for the common man. They planed that voters would not vote for Jacksonbecause of vetoing the Banks charter but it ended up causing Jackson to receivemore vote because the common man also didn’t like the Banks due to it onlyhelping the wealthy class. The Common men out numbered the number of wealthymen’s votes.

Tariff of Abominations

alsoknown as the “tariff of 1828”. It was a 1/3 to ¼ tax on goods. It wasestablished in order to protect domestic industries from foreign competitionthat could afford to lower their products prices. This pleased the Northern andWestern states because now their products were being bought and industries werebeing protected. However, the Southern states were angry about this tax becausenow they had to pay higher prices for products that they did not produce andbought for foreign countries. In 1832, the tax was lowered to 16% with thetariff of 1832.

Force bill

a bill that denied the right of nullification orsecession to states. Issued a threat to any state that tried to carry theseactions out by stating that the Army would be used to put down anyinsurrection. It was a result of the southern reactions to the tariff of 1828,also called the Tariff of Abominations. This bill led to South Carolina Breaking away from the Union, whichbreaks the Northwest Ordinance. Which states that once you join the union andbecome a state the it cannot leave, once a state always a state.

the Cherokee Nation was forced to move out of Florida, Jackson disregarded the verdict of the court case, Worcester v. Georgia.

Worcester v. Georgia(1832)

Article 1 section 8 clause 3, the commerce clause-> state of Georgia gov't made the Indian removal Act, but in the constitution it stated that the Native Americans were to be treated as a foreign nation, which the federal government is only allowed to make such Acts. So in this court case, the Indian Removal Act was declared unconstitutional.

Panic of 1837

causedby the three years of the downfall of the Bank of the U.S. after Jacksonwith-drawled the federal money and placed it into “Pet Banks” to help the commonman rather than the wealthy. Jackson wasn’t blamed for the panic at firstbecause he stepped down in 1836 and Martin Van Buren currently in office whenthis turned into a depression.

Calhoun in 1831.
