What is a no-go nipple?
It is a nipple with a smaller/restricted bore. It prevents the intervention tool from running any further.
What is the primary purpose of a no-go nipple?
Its main purpose is to locate the profile of the tool.
How does the lock mandrel lock?
It is the combination of lock keys/dogs (45 and 90 deg) and a matching profile.
How does a lock mandrel seal?
It seals using elastomeric packing.
What is the primary purpose of a nipple?
Its primary purpose is to receive flow control devices.
What are the packer types?
Permanent and retrievable.
How do you retrieve a retrievable packer?
It is attached to the completion tubing. Pull out the completion/tubing.
How is a permanent packer removed?
It is attached to the casing. It needs to be milled out.
Where is the packer located?
Above the top perforation.
Where is the Sliding Side Door (SSD) located?
Above the packer.
What happens to the tubing when flowing the well?
It expands and becomes longer.
What happens to the tubing when pumping chemical injection?
It contracts and becomes shorter.
What happens to the tubing when pressure testing from inside?
It balloons and becomes shorter.
What happens to the tubing when pressure testing from outside?
It reverse-balloons and becomes shorter.
What precautions must you take before setting a sleeve (SSD)?
Equalize the pressure and make sure it is fully open or fully closed.
What is SPM?
Side pocket mandrel.
What is an side pocket mandrel (SPM) used for?
It is used for circulating between the annulus and the tubing.
If we run an SPM and do not want to circulate, what do we do?
We install a dummy valve in the pocket.
If we run an SPM and we want to circulate, what do we do?
We remove the dummy valve and install a circulating valve.
When we stop circulation on the SPM, what prevents the hydrocarbons from entering from the annulus?
Check valves.
Name two methods for temporary circulation.
Side pocket mandrel (SPM) and sliding side door (SSD).
When should sub-surface safety valves be used?
They are only used in emergencies.
What is the normal state of a sub-surface safety valve (fail safe)?
Normally closed.
Where can a sub-surface safety valve hold pressure from?
Only from below so we can pump-through.
What are the two types of sub-surface safety valves?
Wireline retrievable and tubing retrievable.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a tubing retrievable valve?
Advantage: same bore as tubing so we have higher flow.
Disadvantage: we have to kill the well if we want to retrieve it.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a wireline retrievable valve?
Advantage: can be retrieved at any point without killing the well.
Disadvantage: has a smaller bore than the tubing which restricts the flow.
How do you hold a tubing retrievable valve open when RIH?
Using control line pressure or a straddle.
How do you hold a wireline retrievable valve open when RIH?
Using a running tool and prong.
How would you open a sub-surface controlled valve that is closed?
Equalize the pressure.
How does an ambien/differential valve close?
Change in ambient/surrounding pressure.
If a tubing retrievable valve fails, do we need to kill the well?
No, we lock the tubing valve open and we insert an insert valve.
At what depth do we set a safety valve?
Below a depth where damage could occur to the valve from surface impact or explosion.
At what point during running of the valve (wireline) would we see control line pressure at the surface?
When the seals are in place (both) inside the nipple.
What is the primary purpose of the annulus safety valve?
Prevent flow of gas from the annulus in a gas lift completion.
What is the primary purpose of a tubing hanger?
Suspend the weight of the tubing/completion.
Isolate the tubing from the casing.
Provide a profile for a barrier or plug.
What can constitute a barrier?
Anything that prevents flow. Check valves and anything ending in "plug."
What does the term 6BX mean?
It is a type of flange with a metal ring gasket.
What is test pressure for a tree?
Usually 1.5 times working pressure.
Which valves on a tree are working valves and which are safety valves?
The upper master valve is a working valve. The lower master valve is kept open and in good condition.
Which master valve cuts wireline?
Some of them (special requirements must be in place).
What is the cross?
It is the block between the swab, master, chocke, and kill valves.
What is the primary purpose of the lower nipple?
It is used for gauges since it is below the perforated joint and it cannot seal the well.
What is the primary purpose of the middle nipple?
It is used for setting the packer and plugs. It is the first barrier.
What is the primary purpose of the upper nipple?
It is used to set plugs for pressure testing and circulating. It is the second barrier.
What is the main purpose of the flow coupling?
It is to reduce turbulent flow.
What does "X" stand for in nipple naming?
It stands for selective (made by Halliburton). We can choose which one to choose since the bore is not restricted.
What does "XN" stand for in nipple naming?
It is a nipple that has a no-go for locating the flowing tool.
What is the main purpose of a packer?
Isolating hydrostatic.
What is the kick-over tool?
It is a tool used for setting and pulling valves from the side pocket on the SPM.
What are some other names for sub surface controlled safety valves?
Ambient, differential, and storm chokes.
What are some types of check valves?
One way pressure valve and two way pressure check valve.
Does the swab valve shut off flow from the well?
No, it needs the choke and kill valves to be closed as well.
