What are 4 common reactions people who work w/t trauma survivors have?

1. Over-identification

2. Under-identification

3. Transference

4. Counter-transference

Over-identification

Therapist starts to think that clients problems are their problems.

Why is over-identification bad?

It may inhibit the therapist from letting the client make her own decisions.

A therapist should not say “if this was my problem I’d do this, so should you.”

Under-identification

Therapist sees helping her client as merely a job.

Transference

Client transfers attributes (+ or -) of another person onto the therapist (e.g. she’s like my mom...she must do everything like my mom)

What did Ilfee & Steed find?

They found that therapist working w/t trauma clients experience a decrease in confidence (to do the job) as time passes.

What may have mediated Ilfee & Steed’s finding?

1. Trouble accepting client make her own decisions

2. Feel isolated from friends, no one wanted to hear about their work

3. cognitive schema about the world is altered (e.g. they see abuse everywhere)

4. Take on to much responsibility

What attributes of victims do shelter workers tend to prefer to work with?

Stable and external attributes

What are the 3 criteria for “burnout”?

1. Person is emotionally depleted.

2. Person adopts belief that client is not human, just part of their job.

3. Person stops believing that her job accomplishes something meaningful.

What are 6 broad ways of answering any PSYC question?

1. Emotional

2. Cognitive

3. Behavioral

4. Social

5. Societal

6. Material

How do burnt-out individuals effect the organization?

1. Co-workers don’t understand, think they are just being lazy

2. Tardiness, absents, turnover, early retirement

3. Low morale

4. Inefficiency

What did Brown & O’Brien (1998) find?

1. Burnt-out shelter workers did not experience lack of meaning.

2. Positive reframe, active coping.

3. Felt there was to little time, always behind... led to emotional exhaustion & depersonalization.

4. Mental disengagement was correlated w/t emotional exhaustion.

5. Perceived social support negatively when they had emotional exhaustion & depersonalization.

Met all burn out criteria except 1

What did (Baker, O’Brien & Salahuddin, 2007) find?

1. Studied 123 shelter workers from DC area.

2. Also found that they did not meet typical burn-out criteria.

3. Also found that time pressure and lack of confidence (Illfee & steed!!) predicted emotional exhaustion.

What predicts emotional exhaustion?

What type of clients do shelter workers tend to be biased toward/prefer working w/t?

Stable—“the abuser never will change” & external—“it’s his fault, not mine.”

Given the 4 types of reactions, what is a way to deal with stress & burnout?

Attend to those reactions!

Given the findings that time pressure may predict emotional exhaustion, what to do?

1. Diversify work responsibilities, so there’s more time.

2. Self-nurturance - being in a rush to always work could be contributing to the anxiety. Sleep well, eat something. Find time.

Given lack of confidence, what to do?

1. Obtain adequate training

2. Even if you have adequate training, if you still feel unconfident, seek personal therapy

Given the struggle to accept victims making their own decisions, what to do?

Positive reframe - identify instances of clients resilience and strength, even if they decide to go back.

Ways to cope w/t stress?

1. Seek social support

2. Exercise

3. Use breathing techniques

4. Socio-political action

1. Material

2. Emotional (“your awesome”)

3. Cognitive (challenge maladaptive beliefs)

4. Social support provides all the above types of support, so it’s important!
